Adytum means the innermost sacred part of a Greek temple - sanctum. This is what we at Adytum seek to create - a totally safe, comfortable, caring and confidential environment. It is here that people can bring the issues and concerns that trouble them. By creating the correct environment it becomes somewhere that people can bring their worries and be totally listened to without being judged and where they can be supported whilst they discover for themselves the solution to their own unique problems.
The Adytum Counselling Service was set up in 1996 with the aim of providing a professional therapeutic service to individuals, couples, groups and corporate clients in the South Wales area. Adytum is based in Swansea which makes the organisation ideally located to provide such a service. The service that Adytum provides has grown and expanded along with the experience of its founder Tony Phillips and now has developed into many different areas of counselling as the various needs of clients have been identified.
Adytum now has a total of five counsellors who work within the group and who are all professionally qualified. The range of knowledge, experience and training that each counsellor brings to Adytum means that there is no one issue that we feel unable to deal with. All counsellors are vetted by the Criminal Records Bureau and are members of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). We abide by the BACP Code of Ethics and Practice. At Adytum we also aim to involve ourselves in, and undertake, ongoing training and support. This commitment to enhancing our knowledge base and experience is essential if the service that we offer at Adytum is to continue to grow and thrive.
We are able to offer a great deal of understanding and support to young people utilising the considerable experience of our counsellors. Tony is an experienced foster carer specialising in difficult to place young people, whilst other counsellors have worked extensively with the young unemployed and with drug and alcohol abuse. This gives us a particular interest in the issues faced by young people today. Creating a safe caring environment where these children can heal and grow is imperative as is their continued support. The issues that these young people bring with them, such as behavioural problems, the effects of emotional or sexual abuse, extreme neglect and deprivation, eating disorders, alcohol and drug problems, enables our counsellors to be more aware than most of what the world is really like for young people today. Adytum works closely with young people in a therapeutic role with CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service) and is a partnership that has been developed to help support children and young people coping with their parents' separation or divorce.
There are other partnerships that have been established over the years. The partnership with the Shaw Trust provides support for adults who are experiencing difficulties either in the workplace or who need assistance getting back into work. Other partnerships include Neath & Port Talbot CBC, Land Registry Wales, University of Wales (Aberystwyth) Pembrokeshire College and others. Our corporate work is ongoing and developing as time goes on.
We intend to remain a small to medium sized service which can keep in touch with our clients, both private individuals and corporate, and their changing needs. We are always available for discussion regarding the service that Adytum can offer each client. We endeavour to establish and maintain positive links and relationships with our service users. We monitor feedback from our clients, and have a user questionnaire to facilitate this. Where areas for improvement of the service are identified we endeavour to make changes in order that the service is constantly improved and updated.
